Ep. 37: Grave Mistake: MANIC STREET PREACHERS Shoulda Been Huge!!!

Episode Summary

This week is our fourth installment of an ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. In this episode we feature Welsh stalwarts that sit firmly in between alt rock, punk, glam, and britpop: the amazing MANIC STREET PREACHERS! Although they were huge in the UK and Europe, they never made a splash in the US even when bands like Blur, Oasis, and Muse were breaking big into the American market. Kevin discovered them while visiting the UK in 1998 and has been “preaching” about them ever since.

Episode Notes

This episode is obviously rooted firmly in our Should Have Been category. The Manics have been walking the line between punk, cock rock, romantic melodicism and glam since the late 1980s. They are rock n’ roll heroes in Wales, having sold over 10 million albums worldwide. Thirteen albums in and they are still going strong! We couldn’t get through their entire discography in this episode, so expect volume 2 soon!

Songs this week include:

  1. “Motown Junk” from Single (1991)
  2. “Love’s Sweet Exile” from Generation Terrorists (1992)
  3. “Yourself” from Gold Against The Soul (1993)
  4. “Revol” from The Holy Bible (1994)
  5. “Elvis Impersonator: Blackpool Pier” from Everything Must Go (1996)
  6. “You Stole The Sun From My Heart” from This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours (1998)
  7. “Intravenous Agnostic” from Know Your Enemy (2001)
