Ep. 73: Grave Mistake: MARILLION Shoulda Been Huge!!! 90-99

Episode Summary

This week we give you the 9th installment of an ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. This time around we feature another group that had massive success in the UK that never quite caught on here in the States; the neo-prog innovators: MARILLION! Since this band has such a massive catalog and breadth of releases, we’ve decided to only focus on their 90’s output this time around (since that is when Kevin first discovered and fell in love with them). If you are from the US and have heard of them, more than likely you are familiar with their 80s output. That’s not what you are going to get here. This is an entirely different version of the band that completely reinvented themselves with a new singer and new decade!

Episode Notes

This episode is obviously rooted firmly in our Should Have Been category. Marillion is a band that has amassed an amazing catalog of successful yet cult band-ish albums that are nerdy cool, with deep lyrics, but with a keen sense of humor. Kevin refers to them as the English Rush, but this is an amazing group all on their own. We think they SHOULDA BEEN HUGE!!! We hope we either re-introduce you to this band, or turn you on to something new!

Songs this week include:

  1. “Cover My Eyes” from Holidays In Eden (1991)
  2. “Runaway” from Brave (1994)
  3. “King” from Afraid Of Sunlight (1995)
  4. “An Accidental Man” from This Strange Engine (1997)
  5. “Cathedral Wall” from Radiation (1998)
  6. “A Legacy” from Marillion.com (1999)
